All buildings reach a time in their lives when they need a complete remodel. Along with the new wall coverings, paint, flooring, upgraded doors and everything else that goes into a building rehab, the sign system needs to be considered too. That's where this project started. Haggard Property Group, Ltd. contacted Hi Caliber Signs for a design proposal and quotation to re- sign the entire building.
A complete Architectural Sign System is always a Challenge
There are numerous considerations. Clearly each office suite needs its own sign identifying the occupants. The stairwells and service rooms need to be indicated. Wayfinding has to be addressed in the elevator lobbies, as well as clear evacuation plans. Stairwells have to have signage that meets NFPA 101 National Life Safety Code and all signs must be
ADAcompliant while presenting a crisp modern look that matches the building's decor and color scheme. Tennant space signs have to be easily and inexpensively changeable too. Wow, it's a tall order.
We're up for it!
The designers went to work and in colaboration with the Haggard folks arrived at a basic design that met all of the criteria. The text is raised where needed for the visually impaired, the contrast ratio is correct and contracted braille is applied where appropriate. The parts of the signs that may need to be changed from time to time are cut appliqued vinyl, so it is easy and inexpensive to change. Special consideration was given to the stairwell signs to that they met ADA, NFPA 101 and local building code. After all approvals were finalized the production crew went to work. Once the production was finished and quality assurance was passed it went to installation. In order to speed up production several templates were made with marking points at the locations of the holes to be drilled for the special wall anchors used in conjunction with the standoff system. The templates also had a plumb bob and plumb line that was set to the correct height. In this way all the installers had to do was to place the template on the wall and align the plumb line. Then a firm press left the 4 drill points lightly marked on the wall. All four holes could then be quickly drilled, the anchors inserted and the appropriate sign installed. The entire installation of over 90 signs was completed in a single Saturday, ensuring minimum disruption to daily business activities.
